When the Wisdom Teeth Should Be Extracted
Wisdom teeth are considered the most problematic, as they appear much later than all the others. Very often it’s better to delete them at all, as they cause discomfort and affect other molars.
Why wisdom teeth are called so
The eights teeth come up when a person reaches 17-27 years old. All permanent teeth have grown by this time and this last set of molars arises at a conscious age. A person is considered to have some wisdom by this time, that is why such a name was given.
Still, it doesn’t mean that you are not smart if wisdom teeth do not erupt at all. Anyway, it is a very rare condition not to have them. A rarer one is when the ninth and tenth teeth begin to erupt. And these wisdom teeth do no good at all.
Wisdom teeth are rudimentary, as we don’t need to chew as much hard meat as our prehistoric ancestors did. Jaws of today’s people are narrower and there’s less room for such teeth to grow. Due to this, many problems may be evoked and dental services may be necessary.
What problems are associated with wisdom teeth
If the wisdom teeth have erupted, they align with the bite and function normally, then, of course, nothing bad will happen. It is enough to carefully monitor the hygiene in their area, because there may be some difficulties with it due to the gag reflex and poor visibility. Show up to the dentist periodically and everything will be alright. Such wisdom teeth will exist happily ever after. Still, they may grow abnormally and cause problems.
Retention
It is quite difficult to understand what happens to unerupted wisdom teeth. It would seem that the tooth is not visible, there is almost no danger of caries. However, here there are a number of unpleasant consequences. Despite the fact that the tooth has not yet erupted, it already affects the dentition. It can cause tooth movement and crowding in the anterior region.
Due to the absence of a bony septum between the holes of the seventh and eighth teeth, a deep pocket is formed between them. Food debris, dental plaque and microbes can get there and provoke inflammation. The very process of eruption of impacted teeth, especially at the age of 20 years and older, is often accompanied by pericoronitis.
But the most unpleasant thing that can be expected from impacted wisdom teeth is cysts. Their source is the follicle surrounding the tooth bud. When a tooth erupts, the follicle disappears, but in case of retention it persists and can serve as a source of tumors and cysts. That is why wisdom teeth are extracted in case of retention.
Tooth dystopia
This is an incorrect position of the tooth. It grows towards the cheek, tongue or another tooth. Due to the location, oral hygiene becomes difficult to maintain, and these teeth are quickly affected by caries. It is worse if caries spreads to neighboring teeth, which are functionally important. Often, caries appears on the farthest and poorly visible surface of the tooth. And a person notices it only when the whole area starts to hurt. That is, too late.
In addition, abnormally positioned wisdom teeth create traumatic nodes, break the usual reflex connections, which leads to problems with the muscular-articular chewing apparatus. Subsequently, this is aggravated by the pathology of the bite, overstrain of the masticatory muscles, crunching in the temporomandibular joints. The treatment of such musculo-articular dysfunctions which are connected with wisdom teeth is simply removal.
Removal of wisdom teeth, most often occurs when the patient is not particularly worried about them. That is, this procedure is the prevention of possible complications from the eights. This is a really good idea. There is no method more effective and cheaper than prevention. And the best medicine is preventive medicine.
