How to use a glass dip pen
Glass Dip Pens are not just fine writing instruments, but often works of art that allow a pen aficionado to truly express their inner personality. They add an artistic elegance when placed on your desk or displayed on a bookshelf or mantle. Many pen enthusiasts have a collection of glass dipping pens since their simplicity allows a writer to try out many different types of inks in rapid succession. Changing inks is as easy as dipping the pen tip into water, wiping with a cotton towel and then dipping the pen into new ink! Glass dipping pens provide a nice flow of ink over paper.
HISTORY OF THE GLASS PEN
Some sources state that they originated in Murano, Venice in the 1700s. This claim might have some truth to it since you are likely to come across a lot of references for Venetian Glass Pens. In fact, I found a few online shops that claimed to sell Venetian pens. Now, whether they were actually handcrafted in Venice or made in some factory in Vietnam is a mystery that I might not be capable of solving. Irrespective of where they are made, the fact remains that these are some of the most gorgeous pieces of writing instruments out there.
Glass pens are not just tools of writing, but pieces of art. I’ve always marveled at the miracle that sand and fire can create- sort of like a twin flame relationship. Not only are they beautiful to look at and admire, but writing with them is relatively simple too.
HOW TO WRITE WITH A GLASS DIP PEN
Glass dip pen is a unique calligraphy pen collection which is handmade by experienced glass masters. You won't be able to find a same pen with this since the one and only designed is crafted only once. Glass dipping pens offer more ink distribution, and they are the perfect weight, allowing for a smoother, more comfortable writing experience.
How to Write with a Glass Dip Pen
Step 1
Dip the nib of the pen in your ink. Look closely at the tip of the pen. You’ll notice small yet deep grooves (or veins) in the tip. These tips play a similar role to that of a nib in a pointed pen. These capillaries hold the ink as you write.
Step 2
Allow any excess ink to drip into the below. Dip it only about halfway through the tip of the pen. After you dip the pen, rub it gently along the rib of your ink well to remove any excess ink. If you have excess ink on your pen, it’ll leave blobs as you write.
Step 3
Write! Using a light amount of pressure (as compared to the steel nib pens), make a few practice strokes on the paper. Vary the pressure to see what works best for you, but don’t over-stress it. This will lead to not only a broken pen, but a broken heart as well. You'd better write at an angle, not vertically. It's a elegant glass writing instrument, perfect for daily fonts, calligraphy, sketching.
Step 4
Cleaning! If you're changing colors, just dip the nib in water or gently rinse off the ink under a faucet. Pat dry with a paper towel before dipping into a new ink.
Glass dipping pens are handcrafted and, as such, each batch varies in color. This makes each pen a unique item for your collection. Glass dipping pens with a glass tip or nib can dull after continued use. To restore the fine point, gently sanding the tip back into a point with some very fine sandpaper. Glass Dipping Pens make a perfect graduation, anniversary, wedding, birthday or holiday gift. Many writers use them for sketching
