The Ghutra and The Egal

The Ghutra and the Egal are an inseparable aspect of Arab Clothing style. These are most commonly worn with the men’s robe called the thobe. One can buy thobe online. Thobe can also be called a dishdasha and the other variant is called the jubbah. Dishdasha and Jubbah for sale can be found on the internet quite easily. While you buy thobe online,  you can also get yourself the Ghutra and the Egal. But, before that, you may want to know the essence of this traditional headgear of the Islamic people.

What is a Ghutra and an Egal?

Ghutra and Egal are the scarf and the rope worn on the head. It is usually sported in white color or it is a red and white checked cloth. The Ghutra is the scarf and the Egal is the black rope that firmly holds the Ghutra on the head. Although there may not be many color options in the Arab countries for men’s headwear, there are different foldings one can pursue. The Ghutra or the scarf is generally white in color and the Egal is black in color. You can wear these with a thobe or get one when you buy thobe or buy dishdasha online.

In what colors do the Ghutra and the Egal come?

While they say the range of colors is limited when it comes to the Ghutra and the Egal unlike the women’s headgear Hijab, they have the capability to command equal respect and it finds itself in the regal position. A Ghutra or the scarf comes in beige, white, red and white and in black and white colors. The Egal, quite monotonously, comes in black. Before they wear the Ghutra and the Egal, men wear a cap like clothing on their heads. This cap is called a Kufi. A Kufi has many names such as Taquiya and Tarboush.  This cap helps in stabilizing the Ghutra.

What does each color signify and what are the differences?

As discussed earlier, the Ghutra or the headscarf comes in a few different colors. Here’s the list of the meaning and the time when each color is generally worn:

  • The White Ghutra:

The white ghutra is also called the Sufra. This is the most commonly used color and can be seen frequently in the Arab countries. This is supported by the egal that comes only in black color. This is the typical color of a ghutra. The white ghutra is worn during the summers as it is light and can match the varies colors of the thobe worn by the men. Although the color of the ghutra does not signify any status, it is said that the color white indicates purity.

  • The Red and the White Ghutra:

The next popular choice is the red and the white ghutra also known as the Shimagh. This is also supported by the egal on the top and the kufi at the bottom. It is often debated that this model was inspired by the tablecloths. While some say that it is, some say it is not so. They also say that this type of the ghutra indicates patriotism. Another important thing to note is that this kind of ghutra is heavy in nature and it is mostly only in the winters that we can see people wearing this in widespread numbers.
