If you are attending an Indian wedding there are few choices you have to wear:

  • Lehenga choli - 3 piece dress includes a blouse as top, skirt and a long veil
  • Salwar kameez - It is also 3 piece dress, long top up to knee usually but shorter versions called Patiala is also available. And a pant
  • Anarkali - it is similar to Salwar kamiz but the top is a long gown upto ankle or floor with a tight pant called churidar.
  • Saree -  Again 3 piece outfit, top include blouse, a petticoat to tuck the saree, Long fabric up to 5.75 meters, draped around waist and then covering one shoulder.

If you are slim and tall, Saree can give you a charming personality and style. And a suitable attire for non Indian wedding guest like you.

In this article you will find few useful tips that will make your sari shopping easier and comfortable.

Selecting right fabric & design

When you buy a sari make sure that it is comfortable and suitable for the weather during wedding.

Sarees comes in various fabric and weigh from few pounds to 5 pounds and in some cases even more.

As you are not a bride you can opt for light weight, plain saree with border or lightly embroidered fabric.

Alternatively self weaving fabric like banarasi silk is also suitable for most women.

If you are skinny and want to add volume to your silhouette try to wear banarasi silk and if you are medium built and want to have better fitting, try Net or Chiffon fabric.

Custom Stitching

When you buy a sari it is a long fabric and usually fabric for blouse is stitched towards the end or a part of the sadi it self.

Try to find if the shop you are buying saree can offer you a tailoring service. This way you do not have to find a tailor to get your blouse stitched. And most likely the seller will be Indian or Asian they will be able to suggest you right style and design for the blouse.

Do not forget to ask for petticoat too, because it is very important to wear saree.

How ever you can wear leggings as well instead of a petticoat.

Make it ready to wear

Wearing saree for most women could be a challenging task. Even most Indian woman may not wear sarees themselves. You may need help of your Indian friend to drape saree on you.

However ask saree seller if they can make it ready pleated or ready to wear.

This mean their tailor pre stitch bottom part of saari as per your waist and height. You then just need to wear it as you wear skirt. It is that easy and save you plenty of time for you.

Where to buy

You can check Indian clothing store close to you. If that is not an option there are plenty of online stores like gravity fashion from India that sell variety of sarees. Do not forget to ask for custom stitching, ready pleated and time for delivery. Online stores may take anywhere from 10 days to 30 days to deliver it.

Therefore keep plenty of time with you when you order online.

I hope these tips will help you buying a saree for you. Please feel free to comment below if you have any questions or need assistance :)
