Can You Minimise the Frump When Wearing a Puffer Jacket?

Yes! Puffer coats are notoriously difficult to find in a flattering cut, but it is possible if you know what you're looking for. Nobody needs to look as if they’re taking over New York City with Ghostbusters about to go nuclear on you (you might have to be an 80’s kid to get the reference).  You can look great and still wear a puffer; you just need to understand the rules.

Follow the tips outlined below and you will ensure that you look great in your puffer. It’s all about understanding what does and what doesn’t work.

Tip 1: Choose Less Puffy Coats

You might think that all puffer coats are made the same, but they’re not. They contain different types of material, and some of these materials will make you look bigger. Down-filled coats are great because you can fluff them up to make it warmer, or pat the air out to make them smaller. They still offer a decent amount of heat when flattened, but they have the added bonus of making you look slimmer.

The down coats also have the additional advantage of being made of better quality materials. This means the coat will naturally look better than their synthetic counterparts will look. This will make the coat appear more flattering, so it’s a great little trick in this respect, too.

Tip 2: Choose a Belted Jacket

You might have noticed that there is a great range of women’s belted puffer coat. This is because the manufacturers understand that the belt can be used to make the jacket more flattering. By tightening the belt, you define your waist, which highlights your femininity. At the same time, you draw the coat in, which makes it appear more slimming.

Tip 3: Buy a Coat with Larger Panels

Most puffer jackets have small panels. This is actually a bit of a problem when it comes to achieving a flattering look. The smaller panels make the coat look “busier” and where it moves your eyes around the coat, taking in more detail, the natural impression is that the coat is large. It’s like an optical illusion.

You can help to counter the illusion by choosing a coat that has larger panels. The bigger the panels, the less it draws a person’s eyes around the coat, so they take it at face value and see it for the size it is, rather than as an optical illusion.

Tip 4: Buy a Dark Colour

This tip is literally effective for all types of clothes – tops, trousers, and coats. Dark colours are slimming, and black is the most slimming of all. If you want your coat to look slimmer, then choose a darker colour because it will help to flatter your frame.

In conclusion, if you want to look less frumpy, you should choose a women’s belted puffer coat, with large panels, a belt, and in a darker colour. This will offset the natural frumpiness of the coat.
