Safe school path: Still the dark season is not over

Children are the most vulnerable, so they need to be protected. Parents can make their schooling easier for their little ones by simple means. A safety vest or a simple reflective tape can be keep children safer on road.

The days will be longer; however, when the children are on their way to school, the sun has usually not yet been developed. For the little ones, however, it is particularly difficult to be recognized by car drivers at dawn and in the case of cloud-bound skies. Parents should therefore still make sure that their children wear reflective vest to be perceived sooner.

Darkly dressed pedestrians are recognized by drivers in poor visibility from around 25 meters away, children are simply overlooked because of their size. The stopping distance of a passenger car at an emergency braking distance of 50 km / h is approximately 28 meters. For a darkly dressed child, this braking distance can be too long in case of emergency.

Reflective materials make people visible at a distance of about 130 meters. This starts with the schoolbag, which should meet the standard DIN 58124. Shoes and jackets should be equipped with reflective materials, including the EN ISO 20471 or EN 1150 standards. If children are riding the bike, parents must ensure that the bicycle lights are intact and the appropriate reflectors are installed. Additional protection is offered by light bands attached to the arm and ankle joints or the bicycle helmet.
