Lagerfeld Turned This German R&B Star Into the Newest Chanel Muse
Last night was big for Ace Tee. The stylish German R&B singer, born Tarin Wilda, had her first major fashion moment when she was invited by Chanel to attend the Métiers d’Art show at the new Elbphilharmonie in her hometown of Hamburg. Wilda is an up-and-comer in the music business, one with a keen, ’90s-inspired fashion sense. Hundreds of thousands watched her video for “Bist du Down?” on Twitter back in January. Among them may have been the fellow Hamburg native Karl Lagerfeld. The designer’s team at Chanel dressed Wilda for the occasion in a metallic puffer jacket straight from the Fall 2017 rocket ship–bedecked runway in Paris. She also wore a newsboy cap, a Saturn-shaped logo bag, and strands of signature Chanel pearls. She paired it all with her own black skinny jeans and black crop top. “It was a cheeky, casual, and glamorous hip-hop look,” Wilda says. “The jacket gave me Missy Elliott vibes and I really felt like one of those ’90s supermodels.”
The Chanel show was a full circle moment for Wilda, as she’s long been obsessed with the era of the supers and the style that comes with it. “I always loved the full range of Chanel accessories in the ’90s,” she explains. “All the Chanel designs then were made to be worn in the streets, not just on the runway, and it really changed the way luxury houses looked at fashion. Outside of Chanel though, most of my ’90s influences come from braids, dungarees, baggy pants, and sneakers.” Wilda loves the idea of blending hip-hop with high fashion, as evidenced in both her front row look and the one she wore to the welcome dinner the night before: her own jeans, turtleneck, strands of gold chains, and a metallic gold Chanel trench and sneakers. As for her opinion on the show, Wilda says it was “a mix between sexy, cozy, and elegant.” She adds, “I was excited that they decided to host the Métiers d’Art show Hamburg—it’s a broad city with a range of cultures and perspectives and fashion addicts.” And one cool, Chanel-clad R&B artist we’ll be watching in 2018.
