Don’t we all love the bare ankles trend? I mean, who would have thought that just baring the ankles would up the fashion quotient for the wearer so much, right? And everyone seems to be in on this trend – right from celebs like Ryan Reynolds to Hrithik Roshan, not to mention the ladies – Anushka Sharma to Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, all seem to be rocking this look! So, of course, we all want to follow suit and look as trendy as these guys. But what about the possible repercussions of this so very fashionable trend? (Yes, there’s always a catch. Sigh!)

One of the most common and obvious problem with wearing shoes without socks is fungal infections or what is otherwise known as athlete’s foot (1). This happens simply because of the fact that when you wear your shoes without socks, the sweat generated by your feet is not absorbed by anything but remain in the shoes. Apart from the infection mentioned earlier, this leads to a whole lot of other problems like smelly feet and stinky shoes.

What we must understand is that shoes are made of either leather or at the max, artificial leather. The kind of materials used to make shoes actually do not allow too much room for the feet to breathe, which leads to sweaty feet (2).

Another problem, of course, is when you do not wear socks, your feet tend to slip inside the shoes, and this might lead to ingrown toenails. And since there is no grip for the feet, the toes also tend to curl, leading them to become painful in the short-term and in worst case scenario, deformed in the long-term.

But don’t worry. Just because it is not the most feet friendly of trends doesn’t mean that you cannot rock it, albeit, with a little precaution and change in habits. Here is a list of things that you can start doing to make sure your feet do not get infected as you rock the bare ankles look:

Have you noticed those special tools that your pedicurist uses while snipping your nails, especially the corners of the nails? Those are the right kind of cutters to be used for ingrown nails. So, the next time you are tempted to just chop of the nails because they are too long, take a deep breath, count up to ten, and go and buy yourself a proper pedicure set. Or else you run the risk of hurting your toe corners and breaking the skin, which might lead to more serious problems later on.

Yes, certain shoes are trendier than the others. But it’s important to keep comfort as the topmost criteria when buying a shoe. Shoes that are too small or too big are really bad for your feet. Too small shoes are bad for obvious reasons – they don’t give your feet enough space to move around, and crush your toes, thereby injuring them. At the same time, if the shoes are too big, your feet will move around too much and slip, which is also really bad for them and can potentially cause injuries.

Always opt for “breathing” shoes, which allow at least a little amount of air to pass so that your feet have at least some air around.

Allow your shoes at least 48 hours to dry before slipping them on again. That way, any risk of infection is eliminated from sweat that may be there from the previous time you wore it.

Public areas, especially ones that have wet floors, are just teeming with all sorts of pathogens, which can latch themselves on to your feet and cause infections there. If you walk barefoot and then put on your shoes without socks, the results will be worse. Best stick to at least slippers or chappals when you are there.

The good thing is that shoe disinfectants are easily available. So, just get one of those and spray your shoes with them at regular intervals. This is especially important during the hot summer months.

Always make sure you completely dry off your feet after washing them because moisture inside your shoes is bad news. Also, even if it doesn’t cause an infection, your shoes will start stinking.
